Profile – Experience

The Twente Institute for Wireless and Mobile Communications B.V. (TI-WMC) was created in 2002 as a technology R&D spin-off from Ericsson EuroLab Netherlands. TI-WMC is specialized in wireless mobile communications systems. The activities of TI-WMC are directed towards research, consultancy and product development.

The staff of TI-WMC consists of 14 experienced researchers, system engineers and software specialists with an average of 15 years’ experience in research and development of contemporary wireless and mobile communication technology. Specific knowledge relevant for this project is R&D in wireless and mobile systems, as LTE/UMTS, IEEE802.11; interworking and integration of ad-hoc networking concepts with other radio network technologies as cellular, WLAN, Tetra/C2000, WIMAX, etc.; network mobility support; mesh and ad-hoc networks; multi-radio multi-channel systems; software defined radio and cognitive networks wireless security. TI-WMC has a state-of-the-art research focus on leading edge communication network technology, and a corporate mission to participate in challenging national and European R&D projects.

TI-WMC has a tradition in cooperation in National and International collaborative research projects (more than 18 projects). TI-WMC has incorporated results of the projects in which it has been participating in its product line FIGO that combines Wi-Fi-based multi-radio meshing with cellular and Ethernet connectivity for public safety applications.

Main Role in the SALUS Project

TI-WMC will bring expertise in the area of mission-critical communication networks and UMTS/LTE mobile communications. In the context of WP2 will contribute to the definition of the requirements and use case studies and will closely interact with Dutch operational users, as police, fire brigade, ambulances, etc. Regarding WP3, TI-WMC will participate in the definition of the system architecture and the mapping of Network Enabled Capabilities to the architecture. In WP4, TI-WMC will be involved in the definition of the spectrum requirements and
frequency allocation policies; in addition TI-WMC will contribute to the migration roadmap from stand-alone TETRA+UMTS networks to integrated next generation PPDR networks. Regarding WP6, TI-WMC will work on solutions for Interoperability of services over heterogeneous networks (involving different operators as well as technologies), protocols for Internetwork mobility support / handovers in particular terminal related aspects, and QoS aspects in handover and traffic mapping decisions. Furthermore, TI-WMC will participate in integration and
evaluation activities in WP7 as well as in the activities regarding the definition of the exploitation roadmap (in particular in issues related to Dutch public safety decision makers) in WP8.
